At 15′, Chas Freeman made a compelling rapprochement of the Qianlong Emperor’s (1710/ruled 1735-1795/1799) refusal to embrace global trade AND the new technologies brought by the British ambassador Lord George Macartney (1737-1806) during his mission to the Chinese Court in 1793 with the present US/West resistance (by clumsy measures) to the Chinese present technological innovations and commercial/industrial dynamism. The same Chinese smugness of the end of the XVIII century is uncannily reproduced here by the US/West’ smugness.
